The Shoprite Group is working with Gift of the Givers to make it as easy as possible for South Africans to support the organisation’s relief efforts in the drought-stricken Eastern Cape.

Starting on World Water Day (Friday 22 March), consumers wishing to Act For Change can do so in the following ways:

  • Donate at any of the 20 000 till points in Shoprite and Checkers stores across South Africa simply by adding R5 or more to their purchase. These donations go into the Group’s Act for Change Fund, and all contributions will be diverted to Gift of the Givers until 22 April.

  • Donate via Shoprite Money by dialing *134*3534# from a mobile phone and selecting option 6. (Shoprite Money is available to users aged 18 years and older with a valid South African ID.)

  • Make an EFT to Gift of the Givers: Standard Bank, account number 052137228, branch code 057525, reference: World Water Day.

  • Go to the Masterpass™ App on any smartphone and scan this QR code.

“Large parts of the Eastern Cape are in absolute crisis. People in deep rural areas are getting sick and desperate. Animals are dying because of a lack of water. The situation is critical in many areas including Makhanda (Grahamstown), the Amathole District, Queenstown and Graaff-Reinet.”

- Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder and chairman of Gift of the Givers

The Shoprite Group has been working closely with Gift of the Givers for a number of years to support its extensive disaster relief efforts. The Group also established the Act For Change Fund early in 2016 specifically to assist communities affected by disasters such as drought, fires and flooding.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, counts. In these uncertain times, who knows when you will need assistance. Today you might be helping people in the Eastern Cape, but tomorrow your area might be in need of support.”

- Dr Imtiaz Sooliman
