The Group's flagship brand, serving customers in the mass middle-income market.

1979
The year Shoprite was acquired

As the Group’s original and flagship brand, Shoprite is the biggest retailer in South Africa and is the main spearhead for growth into the rest of Africa. Affordable and accessible, Shoprite provides basic goods and services to the mass middle-income market.

Brand Overview

Shoprite’s story starts with the purchase of an eight-store grocery chain in 1979. The brand first developed in South Africa and expanded into Africa from 1990 with the opening of its first non-RSA supermarket in Windhoek, Namibia. Since then, this award-winning retail brand has grown to include hundreds of stores across the African continent.

The Shoprite brand strives to provide low-cost goods and services without compromising on quality. Apart from a range of quality private labels, Shoprite’s house brand – Ritebrand – offers price leadership on the shelf without compromising on quality.

Added Services

Shoprite stores offer various in-house service departments including bakeries, delis, fish shops, wine sections and meat markets. Selected stores also offer other convenience services, including:

  • Money Market offers customers the convenience of purchasing domestic air tickets, booking bus tickets, making utility account payments, conducting money transfers, and more.

  • MediRite pharmacies provide easily accessible and affordable healthcare services, enabling customers to collect their prescription medicine while shopping.

  • Computicket, where customers can buy tickets to various leisure and sporting events, as well as tickets for travelling.

  • Shoprite LiquorShop can be found adjacent to selected Shoprite supermarkets, allowing shoppers to purchase a range of local and international beverages at supermarket prices.

  • Virtual grocery vouchers can be bought online and sent straight to the recipient’s cellphone. These vouchers can be redeemed at any Shoprite store.

Rewards Programme

The Shoprite Xtra Savings Rewards Programme is helping millions of South Africans to save on their daily groceries. This rewards programme gives customers extra cash savings on more than 1 000 products. Discounts are clearly marked in-store and every saving is automatically reflected when shoppers swipe their Xtra Savings Rewards card.

“The success of Xtra Savings is its simplicity and transparency. No points and no levels, it’s all about straight-forward instant savings on things you actually need.”

– Neil Schreuder, Chief of Strategy and Innovation for the Shoprite Group
