The first ever winner of the Championship Boerewors competition – Tommy Hendriks (74) from Brackenfell in Cape Town, Western Cape – has entered a new recipe for the competition’s 30th anniversary.

Nostalgia prompts Hendriks, a retired Shoprite Meat Market Manager, to enter the competition every year.

“I feel like this year’s recipe is the one that will help me win the title again. In 1992, when I first entered the Championship Boerewors competition, it was only open to Shoprite and Checkers employees. From 2001 the competition was opened to members of the public. Over the years I’ve really enjoyed seeing how my recipes have fared against those of both amateur and professional boerewors makers.”

It is a wonderful experience and I’m already contemplating entering again next year.”
