All four members of the Blaauw family from Wellington, Cape Town will be entering this year’s 30th annual Championship Boerewors competition.

Mother Yvonne and eldest son Delano Jasper won the competition in 2018 and 2020 respectively, with brother Xavier finishing in the top 10 in 2021.

“The boerewors bug bit after I won the competition in 2018. From then on everyone in the family wanted to create and enter a winning recipe.”

“It’s getting very competitive in the house to see whose recipe will win! I’ve been experimenting with different flavours this year and I hope it will take me to the top.”

Xavier, a grade 9 learner at Huguenot High School, was a top 10 finalist in 2021 and has set his sights on the top spot this year. “I am using the experience gained from last year’s competition to refine my new recipe. I’m hoping to make at least the top three, if I don’t take the top spot.”

“As the only member of this family who hasn’t had success in the competition, I’ve been working extra hard to perfect my recipe to take me to the top this year. It’s great to be the champion but I’m also participating for family bragging rights,” explains Yvonne’s husband, Roland.

The annual Championship Boerewors competition, launched by Shoprite and Checkers in 1992, continues to unearth to South Africa’s finest boerewors recipes.
