Shoprite has partnered with CleanCitySA to support the volunteers that form part of its Adopt A Street programme in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
The group of 25 volunteers consist of unemployed people and street vendors who are donating their time to adopt a street and clean it.
Margaret Nkomo, a single mother of three children, is one of the volunteers that has been dedicating her Saturdays to cleaning the streets of Hillbrow.
“I have been selling fruit and vegetables in Hillbrow for 12 years. The dirty streets made it difficult for us to attract customers, but since these clean-ups started, our small businesses are doing a lot better. I am very grateful to Shoprite and Clean CitySA for this initiative.”

“We started this project to bring the inner city of Johannesburg back to its former glory and we thank Shoprite for their continued support. They have made it easy for us to continue doing what we do.”
- Dalu Cele, CEO of CleanCitySA
The retailer donates shopping vouchers to the volunteers and provides them with refreshments during the clean-up events.
“Shoprite is always eager to partner with non-profit organisations that are making a social and an environmental impact in their communities, and the Adopt a Street programme is a wonderful example of the big impact a small group of individuals can have by working together."
- Lunga Schoeman, CSI Manager for the Shoprite Group
