Following the recent fires in Taiwan informal settlement in Khayelitsha, the Shoprite Group was among the first to respond in aid of those affected by the devastating fire.

The Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchen was dispatched over the weekend to feed those left destitute by the fire and today (Friday, 8 January) it has returned to provide the community with meals of fortified soup and bread. The soup truck can feed up to 1 000 people a day.

The Group also donated staple food and vegetables to bring relief to the 150 families affected by the fire.

We would like to thank Shoprite for their support since this disaster happened, they have shown us that we are not alone. The fire happened at a time when most people are unemployed and are unable to put food on the table for their families.

- Sibusiso Mdlankomo, one of the people affected by the fire

“We are a business that cares and are among the first responders when disaster strikes in the communities we serve. Apart from providing direct aid, we also partner with our customers, enabling them to contribute to relief efforts through donations of money or groceries at our stores.”

- Lunga Schoeman, CSI Manager for the Shoprite Group
