“Shoprite’s support has certainly put a bounce in my step, specifically because they share our commitment to ensuring that preschoolers get access to adequate nutrition.”

- Musician Kabelo Mabalane

These are the words of musician Kabelo Mabalane, who with his coach, Peteni Kuzwayo, embarked on Hope With Every Step, an initiative that sees them running from Johannesburg to Durban to raise funds to feed 10 000 preschoolers for a year.

In addition to a donation from the Shoprite Group, the runners were also cheered on by employees from Shoprite Estcourt as they passed through the KwaZulu-Natal town.

Some 109 early childhood development centres across South Africa receive support from Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets, which in the last year included 785 000 meals - more than 2 000 meals a day.

Shockingly one in four South African children under the age of five are stunted and therefore access to nutrition at this crucial stage of a child’s development is a top priority for the retail group.

Mabalane and Kuzwayo are well on their way to completing the 600 km between the two cities, as they aim to raise R6-million. To donate, visit hopewitheverystep.com.
