Checkers this week launched its Sixty60 on-demand one-hour grocery delivery service in the Eastern Cape and Free State.

Sixty60 first launched in a few neighbourhoods in the Western Cape and Gauteng in late 2019.

Customer response has been exceptional due to the service’s lightning fast service and ease of use.

“Covid-19 has also seen a once-in-a-generation shift to online shopping in South Africa, and it's a step change we believe is here to stay.”

- Neil Schreuder, Chief of Strategy and Innovation for the Shoprite Group

“Since lockdown, order volumes have skyrocketed and Checkers rapidly expanded Sixty60 throughout the country to cater for the increased demand. Customers love the control of shopping from their couch, tracking the items as they are picked in-store as well as the delivery of the items in real time from their phones,” commented Neil Schreuder, Chief of Strategy and Innovation for the Shoprite Group.

Over the next two months, Sixty60 will be expanding to 25 new areas, and will be available in the Eastern Cape and Free State for the first time in the vicinity of the following locations:

  1. Checkers Moffett on Main (Port Elizabeth) - 14 Sept 2020

  2. Checkers Greenacres (Port Elizabeth) - 15 Sept 2020

  3. Checkers Mimosa Mall (Bloemfontein) - 22 Sept 2020

  4. Checkers Hyper Fleurdal Mall (Bloemfontein) - 22 Sept 2020

Since launching less than a year ago, Checkers Sixty60 has created 1 250 new jobs to meet the demand for this service. With delivery in as little as 60 minutes, at a fee of just R35, it is South Africa's fastest and cheapest on-demand grocery delivery service.

And the supermarket’s team of delivery drivers have been busy - since the launch of Sixty60 they have driven the equivalent to the moon and back - five times.

With more than 700 000 app downloads, Checkers Sixty60 is already South Africa’s number two shopping application. There are now more than 7,000 groceries to choose from on the Sixty60 app — and it remains the only on-demand service to deliver both alcohol and groceries in the same basket, within an hour - and all at the same low in-store prices.
