Donations made by Shoprite and Checkers customers to the retailer’s #ActForChangeFund early in 2018 will go towards drought relief efforts for farming communities in Sutherland.

In February 2018, the Shoprite Group announced that contributions made by customers to its till-point donation facility would be earmarked to bring relief to communities hit by the worst drought in a hundred years.

From June 2018 the funds are being utilised to support relief efforts by Gift of the Givers in the Sutherland area, where they have actively been assisting with the drilling of additional boreholes, supplying animal feed as well as water tanks and bottled water.

The Group has been reaching out to and supporting drought-stricken communities since since 2015. Towards the end of last year the retailer launched the Smart Water Meter Challenge, which to date has saved more than 88 million litres of water at schools in Cape Town and its surrounding areas.

As of May 2018, contributions towards the Act for Change Fund is in aid of the Lunchbox Fund, non-profit organisation providing a nutritious daily meal for children in townships and rural communities in South Africa.
