Inside the new container at Tshwaranang OVC Daycare

On Valentine’s Day the tradition of showing one person appreciation was broken when 100 orphans from Kaalfontein, in Midrand, received new daycare and educational facilities.

After opening a store nearby, Shoprite reached out to its community and quickly realised the urgent need at Tshwaranang OVC Daycare, which offers orphaned and vulnerable children access to a safe environment to do their homework and learn from one another. It also offers psychosocial camps, home visits, assistance with obtaining social grants, training for unemployed matriculants and the distribution of food parcels.

All these activities were carried out from a dilapidated container, which the children also visit daily. On Valentine’s Day the organisation received a new container fitted with kitchen equipment, floor tiles, plumbing, cupboards, windows, a play area with swings, tables and chairs, and a dedicated homework area.

“Our organisation has a new and better face now. Such occasions are blessings in our community because we desperately need it. Our caregivers were unable to access the necessary resources but today they have all they need. Thank you for choosing us Shoprite.”

- Sindy Mabambe, manager and caregiver at Tshwaranang OVC Daycare

To celebrate this occasion a party was held for the children, which included lunch, special DJ appearances and a fun-filled dance off.

“Today was like Christmas and it will live on in the children’s memory forever. I can’t express my thanks enough.”
