Shoprite and Checkers are proud of the country’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it by hosting the annual Championship Boerewors competition.
And this year we are looking for the 25th Championship Boerewors winner. Entries for the competition are officially open and we are looking for all boerie pioneers, connoisseurs and enthusiasts with an exceptional traditional recipe, plus the skills to make boerewors from scratch.
The supermarket chains’ butcheries are famous for exceptional meat products and the group is always looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer consumers the best in quality and variety. The Championship Boerewors competition plays a pivotal role in helping the group to achieve this aim.
Over the past 25 years, the title of Boerewors Champion has been conquered by South Africans from all walks of life, from housewives to butchery managers, and even by a (then) 13-year-old primary school learner.
The South African Chefs Association (SACA) is a recognised authority on food and will once again take charge of the judging, ensuring that all entries adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors.
How does the competition work?
Entrants will battle it out in six Champion Rounds held nationwide on Saturday, 1 and 8 July 2017. A total of eighteen contestants, three winners from each Champion Round, will then proceed to the Top 18 Round in Cape Town on Saturday, 22 July 2017, where the top three recipes will be chosen by a panel of expert judges from SACA.
The competition really heats up when the top three recipes will be available in Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets for consumers to buy, braai and vote for their favourite between Friday, 18 August and Friday, 8 September 2017. By voting the public ultimately decides who the new boerewors champion is and stand a chance of winning their share of awesome prizes.
After the votes have been audited, the 2017 Championship Boerewors winner will be revealed on Wednesday, 13 September and the recipe will be available in Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide from Friday, 15 September, in time for Heritage Day celebrations in South Africa.
The prize
The 2017 Championship Boerewors grand prize includes a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab Raised Body Raider as well as the honour of having one’s recipe crowned and sold as #SAsNo1. There are also wonderful prizes up for grabs for participants from sponsors Coca-Cola, Wellington’s and Simba.
