Shoprite containers provide safe place for Vlottenburg's children

Apr 20, 2017

The Vlottenburg Community Organisation (VCO) assists more than 80 children in the Wesbank area in Kuils River, Western Cape daily. The organisation offers these children a safe and supportive environment to play, do their homework and eat.

When Shoprite heard about VCO’s amazing work to get these children off the streets and back at school, we immediately wanted to assist.

The Vlottenburg community were eager to learn more about the retro-fitted containers that Shoprite donated to Vlottenburg Community Outreach.

On Wednesday, 19 April more than 100 people gathered for the big reveal of two new retro-fitted containers which Shoprite supplied and had converted into clean, educational spaces.

One of the revamped containers was specifically designed for the little children who visit VCO. It includes colourful seating, book racks and a white board.

Hilton Davids, the selfless man who dedicates his life to helping children in Wesbank, said:

“Before yesterday, we used an old 12 m long container (with no windows) to create a safe place for our children. This new gift is a safe and creative space for the children to learn and eat. Thank you, Shoprite.”
The older children were excited to test the desks in their new training facilities and Hilton (middle in the grey shirt) couldn't contain his smile.
The children couldn't wait to sit in their new after school training facility.

In addition to the containers, Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchen also serves at VCO every Wednesday.

Our Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchen serves Vlottenburg Community Organisation weekly with more than 100 people receiving a warm and nutritious meal with each visit.
