Shoprite supports 34 PlayPumps which bring clean drinking water to more than 340 000 people across South Africa on a daily basis.
A PlayPump is a specifically designed “merry-go-round” that pumps water into a reservoir as children play on it, providing clean drinking water in impoverished, rural communities while giving children a constructive and rewarding way to use their energy.
It also means community members no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water and there are less incidences of waterborne diseases that keep learners away from school, affecting their education.
Shoprite is committed to taking hands with local partners to effectively respond to the needs of the communities in which it trades and has been supporting PlayPumps since 2002.
