As the largest private sector employer in South Africa, the Shoprite Group believes that developing people’s skills drives not only our business, but the economy at large.

And the youth plays an important part in driving success. According to Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2017, 38,6% of the youth (15 - 34 years old) are unemployed. With youth unemployment in mind, we are working to create education and job opportunities for thousands of people each year.

One of these initiatives is our extensive bursary programme which supports students who are studying scarce skills programmes, such as pharmacy and chartered accounting, as well as programmes in supply chain management and logistics, IT, industrial engineering, hospitality, retail business management and marketing. With an investment of R20 million rand per year, the programme has translated into more than 3 000 permanent employment opportunities in the past decade.

This Youth Month we want to invite youth who dreams big to apply for a Shoprite bursary or find out more about one of our graduate programmes.
