Shoprite and Checkers are putting their weight behind education by offering consumers the lowest prices and best value on Back To School items, whilst facilitating learning through its ‘Class of 2016’ and ‘Feed a Child, Nourish a Mind’ initiatives. The Shoprite Group believes that education is the foundation for further development and entrepreneurship as it equips the youth to unlock their immense potential.Children who don’t have enough to eat cannot work towards a proper education. In South Africa, over 4-million school children are affected by hunger every day.

Feed a child, nourish a mind.

To help foster education via nutrition, Checkers partnered with The Lunchbox Fund to develop a special ‘Feed a Child, Nourish a Mind’ exam pad. Retailing for only R10, each exam pad sold will provide a nutritional, hot meal for a schoolchild in need. This simple intervention provides a behavioural incentive for children to attend school, as well as an economic incentive for their impoverished and/or unemployed caretakers to keep them there.  Click here to see more on YouTube.

Class of 2016
Shoprite stores have been sponsoring school fees for hundreds of learners across South Africa for the past 10 years through its annual ‘Class Of’ competition.
In 2016 every one of Shoprite’s 420 South African stores will again provide one learner with free education for a full year through its ‘Class of 2016’ competition.
Entrants just have to write a short essay or draw a picture, depicting what they want to be when they grow up. Entry forms are available in-store and the competition closes on Sunday 31 January 2016, following which each Shoprite store in the country will pick one winner by way of a random draw.
