After the devastating fire at Lakehaven Children's Home in Durban last week, donations of all forms have been flooding in and everyone is doing what they can to help. As part East Coast Radio’s Mandela Day celebrations, members of the public were invited to drop off donations at the home. The Shoprite Durban divisional office joined in on the giving and donated R 50 000 vouchers to assist the home with food and other necessities.

The Shoprite Group has also made 67 000 sandwiches for local charities in need this Mandela Day, and has pledged to keep doing this every month for the next year, until Mandela Day 2017. The 67 000 peanut butter sandwiches initiative forms part of the Group’s comprehensive Hunger Relief programme which involves the donation of surplus food from all of its stores to hundreds of non-profit organisations feeding thousands of hungry people daily as more than 13.8 million people go hungry in South Africa every day.
