While the British will be celebrating National Fish and Chip day and the Americans will tuck into sweet treats on their National Doughnut Day this Friday the 5th of June, South Africans will have their own reason to celebrate when the country’s largest supermarket chain presents Big Red Friday, its largest ever one day savings promotion on grocery essentials.

Big Red Friday will see consumers saving up to 50% off selected products on a range of food and household items. This one-day only sales opportunity is the Shoprite chain’s version of Black Friday that has attracted considerable attention in November last year when sister chain Checkers was the first supermarket to bring the sales promotion to South Africa. Black Friday is the Friday after thanksgiving Thursday in America when retailers break with massively discounted merchandise and the concept has mushroomed across the world.

South African shoppers will have access to unbelievable specials at more than 415 Shoprite supermarkets throughout South Africa. In keeping with Shoprite’s vision of always bringing consumers the lowest prices, Shoprite is introducing this one-day only Big Red Friday promotion to help ease the economic burden of millions of consumers in its customer base.

According to Marketing Director Neil Schreuder Shoprite’s Big Red Friday promotion is tailored to bring some welcome relief to consumers amidst trying economic times marked by yet another recent fuel increase and a pending rise in electricity costs.

Schreuder adds: “The once-off deals were carefully selected to suit our customers’ shopping needs and we believe that customers will benefit immensely from this day of crazy shopping discounts from SA’s low price leader.”

All items are available during normal store trading hours while stocks last and certain categories of products will have limits per customer to enable as many people as possible to share in the savings.  The deals will be advertised in the media nationally from Thursday, 4 June.
