Black Friday, the world’s biggest sales promotion, will be back at Checkers this Friday, 27 November. Checkers was the first food retailer to bring Black Friday to South African shores in 2014, and this year has also teamed up with Uber to offer selected customers a free, seamless journey to and from their supermarkets on the day.

With 230 stores throughout South Africa, Checkers has cut prices up to 50% on selected food, liquor and household items and Black Friday is expected to be another record sales day. Consumers can, for example, expect to save 50% on items such as a 3kg pack of Omo washing powder or a Dolce Gusto coffee machine.
“In 2014 we served more than 1 million customers on Black Friday. This year we have even more deals on offer, on everyday products that were carefully selected with our customers’ shopping needs in mind,” commented Neil Schreuder, Marketing Director for Shoprite Checkers.

In another local first for Black Friday, Checkers together with Uber will offer customers a free trip to and from their supermarket on Friday 27 November. The first 1 000 new users to sign up with Uber using the promo code CHECKERSBLACKFRIDAY will qualify for a free return trip to any Checkers store (up to R100 each way).

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday in America when retailers break with massively discounted merchandise. The term is historically known in the American retail industry as the day on which business began to turn a profit (in the ‘black’) after having operated at a loss (in the ‘red’) since January. Black Friday is also regarded as the official start of the Christmas shopping season.

Items are available during store trading hours while stocks last. The discounted deals will be advertised in the media nationally from Thursday, 26 November. For more information and specific product details, visit or follow @CheckersSA.

Extended trading hours on Black Friday only:
• Western Cape: 07:00 – 22:00
• Eastern Cape & KwaZulu Natal: 08:00 – 22:00
• Northern Cape & Free State: 08:00 – 20:00
• Gauteng: 07:00 – 20:00 (until 21:00 at selected Checkers Hyper stores)
