More than 1000 hopeful boerewors-experts entered the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, but only 79 boerewors experts remain standing after facing their competitors in tough regional rounds that took place countrywide during August 2014. These regional winners will now face each other once again in provincial rounds to determine which ten will go to Sun City in October in a final effort to win the admired boerewors title!

All ten provincial rounds take place on 13 September. Gauteng, with most entries received, will host two provincial rounds - one in Greymont (Randburg) and another in Boksburg. Regional winners in the Western Cape will travel to Parow in Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal winners to Durban, and Free State and Northern Cape contestants will take on the battle in Bloemfontein where two rounds will be held. Eastern Cape regional winners will meet in Port Elizabeth, North West winners in Brits, Mpumalanga winners in Nelspruit, while Polokwane readies itself for regional winners and their supporters from Limpopo.

In each province, contestants will bring and braai the boerewors they entered into the competition. The events all take place in the morning and visitors will be entertained throughout what promises to be fun-filled events.  Coca-Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products, whilst children’s areas with jumping castles and face painting will keep the little ones entertained.

Top food experts from the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will judge the provincial rounds. The 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will also receive the South African Chefs Association’s stamp of approval, to ensure that the ingredients for South Africa’s best loved boerewors are of the highest quality.
Winners of the provincial rounds each walk away with R2000 Checkers or Shoprite meat vouchers and gift hampers from Coca-Cola, All Gold and Simba. All provincial winners will also enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City where they join the other finalists for this year’s grand finalé on 4 October. Here the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Boerewors Champion will not only walk away with the sought after Championship Boerewors title, but also drive away in a brand-new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.

The country’s many loyal boerewors fans can meanwhile start preparing for yet another taste sensation, because the winning recipe boerewors will hit the shelves of Checkers, Checkers Hyper and Shoprite stores countrywide, on 10 October.

All entrants, supporters and Championship Boerewors enthusiasts are invited to share their excitement in searching for SA’s No.1 boerewors, by using #SAsNo1 in online conversations.
