The sixth annual Wheels and Runners Race, the only integrated wheelchairs and runners race in South Africa, will be held on Saturday, 5 May 2012. The race, with the most beautiful views of sea and mountain, runs through the center of Hermanus!
Sponsored by Checkers and organised by Access for Citizens Committee in association with Whalers Athletic club, the race offers people with disabilities in wheelchairs, as well as able-bodied athletes and members of the public the opportunity to participate in the same event. The main aim of the race is to create greater awareness of the abilities of disabled people and their needs.
You can share in this exciting and inspirational experience by competing in the race against other elite competitors and amateur athletes, or by joining the crowd of enthusiastic supporters.
There are numerous categories to accommodate the abilities of every person:
- a half marathon (21,1 km) for wheelchair athletes only
- 10km, 7km and 5km races for runners and wheelchair athletes
- and a 6km Fun Run/Walk that is open to all members of the public as well as disabled people and their assistants.
Wheelchair athletes participate in racing chairs, hand cycles, tricycles, motorised chairs, shop riders and wheelchairs, while runners take on the beautiful coastal route in their running shoes or bare foot!
Closing date for entries is Saturday 28 April 2012, but late entries for all the categories will still be accepted at the number collection desk in Hermanus on Friday 4 May between 17h00 and 19h00. Fun Walk entries will be accepted on Saturday 5 May at the start line until 9h00.
