The search for South Africa’s No. 1 Boerewors kicked-off on 26 April! Do you have a secret boerewors recipe with a combination of quality meat and spices extraordinary enough to score a winning goal and earn you the title of Boerewors Champion for 2010? Then defend your zone - enter this year’s Shoprite and Checkers Championship Boerewors competition before the closing date on 18 June 2010. Apart from earning the sought-after Boerewors Crown, the winner will also drive away in a brand new TOYOTA Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider!

Your boerewors can’t be just any meat wors though - Shoprite and Checkers’ Championship Boerewors must be a traditional boerewors and there are strict guidelines for making the real thing. The South African Chefs Association (SACA), recognised as the authority on food in South Africa, will be in charge of the entire judging process, and ensure that entrants follow these guidelines.

To be traditional, boerewors must contain at least 90 percent meat - always containing beef, as well as lamb or pork or a mixture of lamb and pork and the fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30 percent. Furthermore, the distinctive combination of spices like coriander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper as well as fluids like vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce are what differentiates traditional boerewors from other variants. So, if you want to get in the game, please ensure that your recipe is valid.

Leading up to the final eligible participants will face-off in approximately 80 regional rounds that take place countrywide on Saturdays 14, 21 and 28 August. Winners of the regional rounds face their toughest adversaries in ten provincial rounds on Saturday, 18 September 2010.

The highlight of the competition is the Grand Finale at Sun City on 2 October 2010 where all ten provincial finalists go for gold in a last bid to determine who will wear the Boerewors Crown. Finalists will enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City, including transport, tickets to Skouspel and accommodation.

Shoprite and Checkers is proud of South Africa’s boerewors heritage and to celebrate this the supermarket group annually hosts the Championship Boerewors Competition which searches for the country’s best traditional boerewors recipe. The competition assists the Group in finding new recipes and ideas in order to offer customers only the best quality products in their Meat Markets.

Entry forms are available at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper Meat Market or enter online at www.championshipboerewors.co.za
