The Shoprite Checkers Toy 4 Toy campaign, held annually by Shoprite Checkers in conjunction with the South African Red Cross Society, urges consumers to donate new or used toys to less privileged children during the festive season. During the 2008 Toy 4 Toy campaign more than 15 000 toys were donated by members of the public and the business community. For every toy that consumers donated, Shoprite Checkers will match it with a brand new toy.

On Friday 19 December Shoprite Checkers handed over some of the donated toys to bring early festive cheer to children from the Baphumelele Children's Home in Khayelitsha. The children were all smiles as they were each surprised with a Shoprite sweets parcel and a Christmas present.

Founded in 2001, Baphumelele Children's Home is a place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children, most of whom are either infected with or affected by HIV/Aids, and aims to provide these children with a stable, loving and permanent home. It also serves as a place of safety for children in crisis 24 hours a day.

The rest of the toys collected through the 2008 Toy 4 Toy campaign will be distributed to children’s organizations throughout the country by the South African Red Cross Society.

Thank you to everyone who donated a toy and assisted Shoprite Checkers and the South African Red Cross Society to bring festive cheer to some of the many less fortunate children in South Africa.
