The Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition was launched on Monday 21 April 2008 and the hunt is officially on for South Africa's top boerewors-maker. Anyone in the country who believes he or she has the secret to the tastiest boerewors, may enter. Your unique boerewors recipe could earn you the title of South Africa’s new Boerewors Champion and make you the owner of a brand new TOYOTA Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider!
South Africans have made various valuable contributions to world cuisine, of which possibly the most famous of our culinary treasures is our real boerewors. Shoprite and Checkers is proud of South Africa’s boerewors heritage and to celebrate this the supermarket group annualy hosts the Championship Boerewors Competition which searches for the country’s best traditional boerewors recipe. The group is renowned for the excellent quality of the meat available at their Meat Markets and they are continuously looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer customers the best. The annual Boerewors Championship is instrumental in achieving that goal.
Apart from the usual fun and flair associated with the competition, this year promises even greater excitement with 7de Laan joining in the fun. However, unlike their previous participation in 2004, Hilda and Matrone won’t be the only two vying for the title of Boerewors Champion, as Marko, Paula, Mandla, Maria, and Diederick all try their hand at the art of making boerewors. Watch the homegrown soap on SABC 2 at 18:27 each evening between May and October to see the sizzling storyline unfold and find out who in the Laan makes it to the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Final in Sun City.
Making boerewors is serious business and Shoprite and Checkers demands that their Championship Boerewors be a traditional boerewors. The South African Chefs Association, recognised as the authority on food in South Africa, will be in charge of the entire judging process, and ensure that entrants follow the specific guidelines for making the very best of the real thing.
Leading up to the final approximately 85 regional rounds will take place countrywide during July and August. Winners of the regional rounds will compete in ten provincial rounds on Saturday, 13 September 2008.
The highlight of the competition is the Grand Finale at Sun City on 04 October 2008 where all ten provincial finalists get together for the grand cook-off to establish who will wear the Boerewors Crown. Finalists will enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City, including airfares, tickets to Skouspel and accommodation.
Entry forms are available at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper Meat Market or online at http://www.championshipboerewors.co.za.
So if you think your secret boerewors formula has what it takes to beat the best, hurry up and submit your recipe now! Entries close on 12 June at 17:00.
