Months of preparation in the regional and provincial rounds of the Shoprite Checkers / South Africa School Netball (SASN) National Under-13 Netball Championship came to a conclusion on Saturday 04 August 2007 when teams from across the country battled it out for the national winner’s trophies.
The national finals of the Shoprite Checkers / SASN National Under-13 Netball Championship took place between 18 merit and development netball teams at EG Jansen High School in Boksburg, Johannesburg when hundreds of players, parents and supporters met to witness the deciding matches for the championship.
Hennop’s Park Primary won in the Merit Finals beating Middelburg Primary 27 -15. In a nail-biting match in the Development final Inxweni Primary beat Golden Park Primary 22 –12.
For the ninth consecutive year, Shoprite has continued the sponsorshop of R12,5 million to promote the development of South Africa’s largest women’s sport in South Africa among the millions of young girls attending the country’s 25 000 primary schools.
This major development initiative of women’s sport has involved netball matches at regional, provincial and national level countrywide – including some of the most remote rural areas – for the past nine years.
The Shoprite Checkers / SASN) National Under-13 Netball Championship under the auspices of SASN is designed to enable talented players to go on to play Netball at high school, provincial and national level, while allowing parents, teachers and whole communities to become involved in the process.
Chairperson of SASN, Di Woolley comments on the significant impact that the Shoprite sponsorship has had on the development of youth Netball in South Africa: "This year has seen great strides in the professional level of play as seen on the courts over the past few months, and we are delighted to see the important role these Under-13 championships play in further strengthening Netball as a leading sport in our schools."
