The Shoprite Checkers/ SABC2 Woman of the Year Award this year celebrates its eleventh anniversary in a year that has special significance for South African women.

It is the 50th anniversary of the biggest mass-gathering of women in South Africa on 9 August 1956 when 20 000 women marched in silence to protest the carrying of passes.

The Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award has a special link to this memorable occasion. When Government decided to honour women every year on the anniversary of this day of great significance by announcing National Women’s Day the Award was the first major initiative for the day.
