Listen to some of the pledges made on Cape Talk:
South Africa has been battling ongoing water scarcity, with the Western Cape hit by the worst drought in a century. It was declared a disaster area in May 2017 and the water crisis is affecting everyone. Shoprite is a business that is committed to Act For Change in the communities where we trade and therefore have taken the responsibility to find innovative ways to help everyone through the water crisis.
We've extended our existing water-saving initiatives to include a smart meter roll-out programme which will save 1 million litres of water a day at schools across Cape Town. 100 Smart Water Meters are being installed at Cape Town’s top 100 high-volume water-using schools in partnership with Bridgiot, a start-up company affiliated with Stellenbosch University, which designed and built the smart water meter locally.
Corporates are challenged to PLEDGE for the installation of Smart Water Meters to other Western Cape schools in order to reach every school in the Western Cape! Schools who want to participate by funding themselves or by benefiting from a corporate pledge, can apply here.
Every 100 Smart Water Meters will save enough water per day:
"Join Shoprite in this venture and pledge to help the schools to save water. The time has come for us to work together to avoid Day Zero."
- Professor Thinus Booysen from Stellenbosch University
