Thousands of families and individuals have reason to smile this Christmas thanks to the #Shareforgood festive season campaign in which the Shoprite supermarket chain donated 10 000 buckets filled with non-perishable food to the value of more than R1 million, to be distributed to various charities and communities in need across the country during December.

The #Shareforgood campaign saw FoodBank SA distributing the largest share of 10 000 food buckets to beneficiaries nationwide, while 4000 buckets were allocated to 40 influential South Africans to each hand over 100 food buckets to a charity of their choice or people in need in surrounding communities.  FoodBank SA was invited on board as it redistributes food in communities with high food insecurity nationally  to over 1500 beneficiaries nationwide.

Personalities who committed themselves to #Shareforgood include musician Toya Delazy, Orlando Pirates Football Club’s Thabo Matlaba, the cast of SABC1’s hit show Skeem Saam, Springbok rugby player Bryan Habana, Maritzburg United Football Club, Big Brother South Africa’s Sol Phenduk, Ukhozi FM disk jockey Thembeka Zondo and the Nashua Cape Cobras team just to hopefully name a few.

The personalities shared their experience by posting and tweeting about their their #Shareforgood handovers.  Through their kind work and efforts, their good will rubbed off on others.  The overwhelming response received can be seen here.

A further R20 000 was allocated to Bryan Habana’s charity, Woodside Special Care Centre, when members of the public voted his involvement as their favourite in this campaign.  Woodside provides shelter and care for the specific needs adults and children in their care each.

Shoprite continuously contributes to the well-being of the communities it serves through various community initiatives nationwide and this festive season the retailer also invites consumers to get involved and bring some festive cheer to those who have less. “Every South African can do their bit by filling a bucket with non-perishable food according to their means, and donate it to those in need while encouraging friends and family to do the same,” says Neil Schreuder, marketing director of Shoprite Checkers.

Some of the charities and communities that benefitted from the #Shareforgood campaign include Phomolong Child Welfare and Tshepang Care Centre in Thembisa; Kliptown Youth Programme in Kliptown, Soweto; The Texas Battle foundation in Langa; Gugulethu Sports Centre and Urban Rural in Cape Town; Skeen Primary School in Alexandra; KwaNyamazane Community Educare Centre, Ekukhanyeni Centre and Ekujabuleni in Pietermaritzburg; Gompo Welfare Society in East London; Youth Impact in King Williams Town;  Beauty for Ashes in King Williams Town; Interconnect Kids Rugby Club in  khayelitsha, and the Red Cross Children’s Memorial Hospital in Cape Town.
