The Shoprite Group’s graduate programme offers opportunities to graduates in any field related to the retail business. Maude Modise is one of the Financial Managers who came through the programme and wants to do more than just crunch numbers every day. Today she finds great satisfaction in knowing her job improves many lives.

"I work in retail so my job is very dynamic. I compile and analyse reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, meet with the different teams to discuss how to ensure better performance and also implement control systems that safeguard the business’ assets. My annual forecasts and budgets also inform business decisions and offer insight into projected company growth."

A magshot of a woman.

Through sheer determination, Maude climbed the ranks: in 2014 she was still a trainee accountant, just four years later she was promoted to the Financial Manager at Shoprite's Distribution Centre in Johannesburg. And today she is the Divisional Financial Manager for USave Gauteng.

"I was a Shoprite bursary recipient during my BCom Accounting studies at the North West University, and as such was contractually obliged to enter the graduate programme upon completion of my degree. I was lucky to be placed in a department that allowed me to define my own career path. Back then, I wasn’t too sure where I was headed, but knew I needed to do more than just crunch numbers. I wanted to know what influenced the numbers and how I could use that to improve the business’ service."

"I watched my leaders and learnt from them."

Today Maude is the type of manager she looked up to. Through her mentorship and leadership she encourages other young graduates.

"Our mentorship platform means they can talk to me when they’re having a bad day and mostly I’d understand because I’ve been there. Exemplary leadership and supportive mentorship is what encourages our future leaders."

"This strong support system coupled with a programme that offers opportunities that are only limited by your expectations is a springboard for success."
