Food garden and kitchen facility turn Wathint’ Abafazi into a beacon of hope in the Joe Slovo community

While our Mobile Soup Kitchen provides immediate hunger relief to the Wathint’ Abafazi crèche, we have also helped it develop its garden into a sustainable food source for the wider community of the Joe Slovo settlement in the Eastern Cape.

Patricia Piyani, who founded the crèche three years ago, found that children came to the creche with empty stomachs and soon found she was providing food without enough fresh produce or adequate kitchen facilities.

The local councillor assisted her to acquire a piece of land where she started a vegetable garden.

The Shoprite Group assisted Wathint’ Abafazi by upgrading the kitchen facility, originally housed in a tiny shack, into a fully functional kitchen stocked with equipment and utensils. We provided training, infrastructure and tools to ensure the sustainability of the garden.

These interventions have enabled Piyani and her team to serve nutritional meals and generate income by selling excess produce and flowers from the garden to the local community.

The Wathint’ Abafazi Sustainable Food Garden in Bethelsdorp, Eastern Cape, was started in 2013 and now feeds over 200 people.
