BACKGROUND AND SCOPE
This Sustainability Report covers the sustainability-related activities and actions of Shoprite Holdings Limited and its subsidiaries (collectively referred to as “Shoprite Holdings” or “the Group”) for the period July 2009 to June 2010. Data and statistics presented in this report relate to the Group unless otherwise stated. Some additional sustainability-related information can also be found in the other sections of the Group’s 2010 annual report and on the Shoprite Holdings website. (www.shopriteholdings.co.za).

REPORTING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GLOBAL REPORTING INITIATIVE (GRI)
The contents of this Sustainability Report have been informed by the GRI (G3) reporting guidelines. On pages 55 to 56, reference is made to the GRI’s G3 sustainability reporting indicators. Based on the information in this Sustainability Report, together with information in the other sections of this annual report, and on parts of the Shoprite Holdings website, the Group achieved self-declared level-C compliance.

REPORT ASSURANCE
While the Group has not obtained independent third-party assurance over this Sustainability Report for the period under review, certain statistical data, such as that relating to transformation and broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) has been independently assessed and verified. In addition, the Group’s Audit and Risk Committee has reviewed the contents of this Sustainability Report and performed a review of selected data and statements reflected in this report. The Group will consider independent third-party assurance over certain key sustainability issues for the next review period ending June 2011.
