Product information and labelling The Group subscribes to the principle that consumers should have accurate and sufficiently detailed information available on packaging for them to take informed decisions about the products they choose. Large suppliers already follow international standards in the information displayed on their products. Buyers work closely with smaller manufacturers to ensure products delivered to the Group contain easily accessible information more detailed than the food labelling requirements of the Department of Health. The Group is particularly mindful of its responsibility in respect of its house brands and private label ranges where it has full control over what appears on the packaging. Not only is information displayed in full but, in the case of products for export, also in the language most accessible to consumers of that particular market.
Sell-by dates on packaging not only assist consumers but also enable store staff to identify items that have passed their sell-by date. Such food is removed from the shelves and handed to the local health department who issues a certificate confirming the items were destroyed according to municipal regulations.
