Shoprite Holdings continues to manage and develop business in a way that provides shareholders with a competitive return on their investment while at the same time being a responsible corporate citizen fully aware of its obligations to the broader community. In pursuing this objective, the Group serves the interests of all its stakeholders – its shareholders, and in particular, customers, suppliers, staff and the communities in which it does business. Although its purpose as a business is to generate a profit, the Group will not pursue profit at the expense of the community or of the environment.

It strives to be, in many respects, a force for the good. Through its operations it creates many thousands of opportunities for employment and career development within the Group as well as at its suppliers. It enables manufacturers to invest in additional capacity knowing they are assured of volume take-off and, in an effort to help correct the social imbalances of the past, assists and nurtures smaller suppliers, some from a disadvantaged background where possible, to achieve the required production standards. Due to its larger presence in South Africa, the Group’s country of origin, much of what it does in this regard is focused on communities in that country. However, as its business grows elsewhere in Africa so does its involvement in the well-being of the people living there.

All its stores, regardless of country, provide the same First World shopping environment in which it offers an extensive range of products at competitive prices. To this end quality products meeting international food safety criteria and manufactured in an environmentally responsible manner, are sourced all over the world at the best prices. At the same time the Group also supports, in all the countries in which it does business, local suppliers and in particular small-scale farmers to advance the local economy.

Sustainability Objectives
Shoprite Holdings is committed to promoting sustainability and seeks to help sustain the world’s environment, society and economy for the benefit of present and future generations. The Group will introduce and set specific targets and objectives to be published and tracked in its annual reports, for specific key environmental sustainability indicators such as energy use, waste production and recycling, and transport emissions.
