Over the past 12 years, Shoprite has expanded its thrust northward beyond South African borders. Currently, 146 corporate and 57 franchise stores serve consumers in the 16 countries where we operate outside of South Africa. In each of these countries (Angola, Botswana, Ghana, India, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) Shoprite created world-class supermarkets.
Since November 2004 Shoprite has enjoyed representation beyond the African continent with the opening of a Shoprite Wholesale operation and a Franchise business under the Shoprite brand in India. Shoprite Hyper Mulund is the first franchisee to open in Mumbai. The Group is the first South African retailer to penetrate the Indian subcontinent, a step taken in consultation with local partners.
In December 2005 the Group entered Nigeria, after South Africa the biggest market on the continent, when it opened a supermarket in a new shopping centre in Lagos.
Shoprite's confidence in Africa for future growth of its business remains undiminished. As we are constantly widening the gap between any competitors and the Group and growing the value of our asset in Africa, Shoprite will continue to invest in countries to the north.
Expansion beyond the borders of South Africa is an essential development for Shoprite as the potential for more large supermarkets in the country has almost reached saturation point. Secondly, Shoprite has always supported the idea of the African Renaissance and we believe our successes in Africa show the way for others to make this Renaissance a reality.
The Group actively empowers small local suppliers in virtually all the countries in which it does business in Africa for the delivery of a range of items, mainly fresh produce and perishable products. Most of these suppliers initially need assistance to meet the Group's requirements in terms of volumes and product specifications. To bring them to the required standard, the Group operates extensive support and development programmes aimed at assisting them to achieve the required standards and produce to our needs.
By opening stores across the continent, the Shoprite Group of Companies is also assisting with the upliftment programmes of other countries in Africa as we create both job and skills development opportunities. The Company currently provides employment to more than 8 873 local nationals in its non-South African operations.
