Over the past 17 years, Shoprite has expanded its thrust northward beyond South African borders. Currently, more than 200 corporate and 43 franchise stores serve consumers in the 16 countries where we operate outside of South Africa. In each of these countries (Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Rebuplic of the Congo (DRC)) Shoprite has created world-class supermarkets.

The Group actively empowers small local suppliers in virtually all the countries in which it does business in Africa for the delivery of a range of items, mainly fresh produce and perishable products. Most of these suppliers initially need assistance to meet the Group's requirements in terms of volumes and product specifications. To bring them to the required standard, the Group operates extensive support and development programmes aimed at assisting them to achieve the required standards and produce to our needs.

By opening stores across the continent, the Shoprite Group of Companies is also assisting with the upliftment programmes of other countries in Africa as we create both job and skills development opportunities. The Company currently provides employment to more than 11 000 local nationals in its non-South African operations.
